Why not just call it Chessmaster 2002 etc.? Yes, it's definitely a different engine, and the default settings are also (slightly) different. The original name for the next version was Chessmaster 2003. However, when all of the sales people started hearing things like "So, when's Chessmaster 9000 coming out?" from their clients, it was decided to stick with that naming convention. jm
