Some people study chess, but won't admit it, preferring to be looked on by others as 'naturals'. I personally don't think playing comps and nothing else will make you a strong player. It will give you an eye for tactics, but strong players are strong both tactically and strategically. They know how to manage their clocks, and how to concentrate with unwelcome noises around them.
