Go up one level in this thread

Let me ask you this then. What if a new organization formed and it had a very nice system of determining the best engine in the world. Maybe it would consist of qualifying tournaments online, some qualifying matches between the top finishers in the qualifying tournaments, and then maybe two final matches to determine which two engines will play for the world championship, then have a legitimate match to determine who the best is rather than a tournament. Tournaments aren't so good at determining who the best is. Often luck plays a role because you might avoid playing one of the top engines while someone else ends up playing all of them. Anyway, if some organization were to arrange something like this, it would be both more beneficial to all of us hobbyists who would like to participate in such an event (since it would be online for the qualifiers), you would end up with a better world championship event all around. The event would last longer, there would be more games for us to talk about. There would be more suspense (e.g. If a top engine was bordering on not making the cut in one of the qualifiers. In a WCCC tournament kind of situation, it's not really exciting, it's more like we think "well that engine is just having a bad tournament" and that's it), and you would have better competition in the finals. So if an organization came along and arranged something like this, I would think that more programmers would lend more credability to this more thorough kind of event. So at that point if this organization starts calling their event the World Championship, do we accept that? IMO that would be a FAR better system than the current WCCC or WMCCC. Since the main addition is the online events, that doesn't add any significant costs. It also cuts down on the total costs involved to everyone. For example, at the WCCC everyone had to travel there. In this format, you only travel if you have a legitimate shot at winning the title, and that probably means commercial engines, and that probably means they have the money (or their company sponsors them). I think this kind of event has incredibly more potential than a single swiss tournament where we all spend tons of money and gather together and see who gets the luck on their side. Logic would lead us to think this would also increase the interest in computer chess if anyone can now compete for the world championship without having to have thousands of dollars to travel. Perhaps the organizing group could pay for the top 4 finishers to come and play their matches and cover their airfare and hotels and stuff. Anyway I'm just rambling about something that will probably not happen anytime soon. But what do you think if this happened? World championship or not? Russell
