I think this is a very good idea if the online route is absolutely not doable. There are gaming centers all over the U.S. Places where people go and play online 3D shooter games mostly. They have high speed connections and lots of machines. They allow you to bring your own machine and use it to play games as well. It sounds like an ideal place for such an event to take place. I would be much more inclined to drive several hours to a gaming center rather than fly to Europe. Of course, I'd prefer to play from my bedroom in an online event, and I think cheating can be prevented to the same degree that it can in an "in person" event, with enough thought put into it.
