Another reason not to have big prize funds:
It would encourage cheating.  There are enough problems with claims of cheating
already.

On the other hand, I think that sponsors could be very useful if they could fly
people to the event who could not normally afford it.

Imagine if chess engines from Uruguay and Africa could be present.  Wouldn't it
be nice if New Zealand and Australia and Viet Nam could be represented?

I pretty much guarantee that you will get as many participants as free trips
that you can arrange.  So if you can cough up 100 plane fares, you will have 100
entrants for sure.
