They use the WCCC's as a means of supporting the magazine. This is terrible. I don't think that you have to deal with them. I just don't think you should call it a world championship, at least not yet, if you don't get them on board. >>If you have enough political sense to find a (big!) niche and fit in, this will >>stand a better chance of happening and leaving everyone with a good impression. > >I can stand politics. I think that they'll be about as likely to attend as if you call it the World Championship of Edmonton. If they don't show up, and many probably won't, that leaves that many more spots for North Americans. I don't have anything against Europeans, but I think that there *has* to be some in-person North American computer chess community, and we don't have that now. I wouldn't want to exclude *anyone*, but I'd be more interested in making sure that the event is attended by North Americans. The big sticking point for the Europeans is going to be plane fare, which is fine. The ICCA doesn't pay for plane tickets, and you don't need to either. If you do, you'll get more people to go, but the amount of cash involve increases enormously. I'd expect you'd have some troubles deciding how to allocate this anyway. Do you give a free ticket to Chessbase, or do you give a free ticket to an amateur from West Virginia? bruce
