I think it would be wise to just consider various major holidays during the summer months in the North American countries, such as 4th of July in the U.S. Just avoid those kinds of weekends and I think it would be fine. >5. After reading the posts of others, I think that one thing should be made clear. I think you should decide what kind of tournament this is going to be, then develop the rest of it around it. For example, if it was going to be a "world championship", then (IMO) the goal is to determine the best engine in the world. If that is your goal, I would expect longer time controls, qualification tournaments, and so on. If you are simply holding an open tournament in an attempt to increase the interest in computer chess in North America, then I think more rounds is a good thing, anyone should be allowed to enter, shorter time control to allow for more rounds, and so on. See how the difference in motive affects these things? Keep that in mind. Also, I liked how they had a blitz tournament one day at WCCC. I think if you are able to put together little side things like the guest speakers, a blitz tournament "for fun", maybe arranging for the entire group to go and do together like the football game you mentioned. It might be interesting to have a "break day" where there are no real games going on, and have a blitz tournament, and maybe see if you can get some chess masters to come and play against some of the engines or something. Maybe a "man vs. machine blitz tournament" or something. Maybe see if you can get the interests of local chess clubs. As for a guest speaker, perhaps if you could get someone who both had a knowledge of computer chess, as well as being a strong player. There's probably a GM or IM who is a very good anti-computer player. They might cost though (a lot). Anyway, there are a few ideas for you. Russell
