Right now the best bet is to get an Epox 8K3A, AthlonXP 2200+ (1.8GHz, 0.13 micron), Thermalright SLK-800 (best heatsink/fan), and the fastest Corsair ram available. You'd be able to run 2GHz air-cooled at 200fsb (400DDR) without problems. The 2100+ & 2200+ (both stock) can beat the P4-2.53 in basically everything if you optimize everything properly in the bios (ram timings, AGP, etc). As I said in previous posts.. places like Tomshardware & anandtech.com do NOT optimize them at all. Tomshardwares' overclocked AthlonXP 1.9GHz was slower than my properly setup 1900+ at 1.6GHz. Overclocked to 1.86Ghz @ 155fsb(310DDR) blew the doors off everything they tested. Why? Like I said.. They don't optimize the Athlon systems. It's not hard, only takes a few seconds. If you think my box is fast.. thats nothing. People are running 2GHz (2200+'s) with AthlonXP's now, 200fsb(400DDR) (and I'm only at 155fsb(310DDR)). They have the KT333 chipset, I have the KT266a, etc. My box still beats the P4-2.53. Now, lets bring price into this. My box is faster than the P4-2.53. Epox 8K3A + 2200+ beats it even more.. at 2GHz w/ air it beats the 'hell' out of it. With that in mind... AthlonXP 2200+ = $211 Epox 8K3A = $68 Thermalright SLK-800 = $50 512mb Corsair PC3200 = $179 Total: $508 Pentium4 2.53GHz = $597 Abit TH7 board = $104 Thermalright Ax-478 = $28 512mb PC1066 RDRAM = $379 Total: $1108 Pay over twice the ammount for a system slower than the AthlonXP. Not a wise decision. Remember, AthlonXP 2200+'s can do this with AIR cooling. The Epox 8K3A doesn't need to have the vcore voltage modified via soldering a resistor to Vfb on the voltage regulator.. They've already allowed up to 2.2v w/o needing to modify the board. By far the best/fastest board to get. Now, if I only had $508.. :)
