Three questions: i remember having seen this game - crazy variation! of course, as an amateur you don't want to be playing this kind of stuff, so i didn't look to closely. >1) Is 16. Qxh1 correct on the next move? > >[D] r1b1kb1r/1p1n1p1p/p1q2P2/4pP2/8/2B3Q1/PPP2P1P/2KR1B1R b kq - 0 16 in the first 4 games in chessbase-online, the black players didnt dare to take the rook. what's interesting is that there was a shirov - van-wely game earlier with this variation where van wely played Bh6+ instead of taking the rook. he lost that game, and for the next encounter obviously looked at this line and decided he could take the rook. so he did and he lost... in a later game, topalov as black didn't take the rook any more, trying Bh6+ again. he lost too against shirov. since then, this line has not been played any more by black players, although white has invited it a couple of times in GM encounters. this probably means that the GMs have come to the conclusion that it is good for white. >3) Finally, in this position, Van Wely's 19... Qxg2 looks wrong. Would 19... >Qxd1+ have saved him? > >[D] r1b1k2r/1p1n1p1p/p4P2/4pP2/8/6Q1/PPPK1PBP/3R3q b kq - 0 19 black players never ventured this since that game, so the answer should be no. only why? 19...Qxd1+ 20. Kxd1 a5 (same idea as in the game)!? 21. Bxe5 Ra6 with a very very unclear position. black is doing fine materially but has very bad piece coordination. i'm sure this game has been annotated somewhere (new in chess or so), maybe somebody who has this magazine could look it up? aloha martin
