I think I agree with you for the most part. There will always be rumors of
course, but I think there is too much instability to know for sure. For example,
in looking up the ratings for Fritz and Shredder I noticed that Quark beat both
of them, and it also beat them in CCT4 if I recall correctly. Yet Quark is only
rated around 2300-2400 on ICC, but it is still a very strong engine. You can't
judge much of anything from the rating. At least not always.

If Ruffian is legitimate and isn't a commercial engine, then the rumors could be
taken as compliments to it's author. If it is a commercial engine, then there's
nothing wrong with the rumors. Either way rumors aren't so bad if you remian
optimistic.
