The operator can be denied the computer account if the rumor is believed by the
ICC admins. The information in the finger notes are required for computer
accounts and must be accurate.

Also, inaccaurate inforamtion pisses off many other computer account operators
who may thereby decide to noplay ruffian.

Inventing rumors is not harmless fun.
