Before putting money into this, I would recommend looking seriously at Arena
(www.playwitharena.com) Then get a ton of free engines, and do not go for the
strong ones (YACE, Crafty, SOS, ... there are many very very strong engines).
Instead, try something like Delfi (which is strong, but can easily be set to
play as low as 1300 ELO chess). Also, there are a lot of weaker (but still in
the 1600 - 2200) range ... all free.

The database features are lacking (in Arena at least - you can download other
freeware such as SCID for a strong chess database program) but as a chess
sparring partner and analysis partner, it is not too shabby!
