If you are able to accept short notation as input, I'd assume it shouldn't be
terribly hard to also accept the longer notation like e2e4. You could try
looking at different programs source (like crafty) or get the source code to an
existing chess server like FICS (it's on FICS's ftp at ftp://ftp.freechess.org/.
