To my Fellow Crafty Friends:

Crafty 17.15 SE is available for free via email. Anyone who requested Crafty
17.14 SE, will be emailed Crafty 17.15 SE.

The new options below (1 & 2) enabled anybody (kids and beginners too!) to play
crafty competively WITHOUT setting the search time to 0.1 seconds. I have
introduced a new option that lets YOU set the piece values just about anything
you want (within reason of course).

Even for seasoned players, it is fun to watch crafty got through it's gyrations
with mis-appropriate piece values. Try "krafty pawngrabber" and watch crafty
grab pawns for little in return!

To get the stand piece values back - it's easy - just type "krafty stand".

This version also plays very well with the "gm" setting, booster 60 60 225
and all extensions set at .75.

Changes added since 17.14 SE

1. Option: "Value" command lets the user set the value of the pieces at either
atteh comamnd prompt or in the crafty.rc file. Added for two reason. easier
resarch om optimla peice values and also serves as a "weaker" option by enabling
values not normally used.

For example - to set all pieces the same add this to the crafty.rc file:

value queen 500
value rook 500
value bishop 500
value knight 500
value pawn 500

2. Alternatively you use the new command "krafty" at the prompt or in the
crafty.rc for quick access to 12 different pre-defined settings:

pawngrabber (loves to grab pawns - even for little in return)
beginner (doesn't understand the value of the queens and rooks - but knows pawns
are worth less)
novice (values rooks, knights and bishops all the same, queens too lightly)
woodpusher (better than the novice , but not by much)
knight (overly favors knights)
bishop (overly favors bishops)
player (overly favors rooks)
expert (overly favors queens)
master (still favors queens - but not as much)
im (well rounded - underestimates the power of the pawn)
gm (solid)
standard (solid - uses the standard 9,5,3,3,1 values (Q,R,B,N,P)

3. Bishop pair code from Crafty 18.xx

4. Limited Recaputure Extensions added.

5. Trojan Horse check enabled ALL the time.

6. Slight Extension revision since 17.14 SE

Crafty 17.15 SE (modified crafty) - original source by Dr. Robert Hyatt ;
modified by Mike Byrne. There was no original Crafty 17.15 - it is primarily
based on Crafty 17.14 - but since I already use Crafty 17.14 SE, Crafty 17.15 SE
was the next logical version number for my modfied crafties.

Thanks again to Dr. Robert Hyatt!

Enjoy,

Mike Byrne
