A mystery needs to be unfolded

Why some chess engines lost on time if there is a small amount of system disk
space while many others are not harmed at all?

Something with clearing hash tables?

Note: Windows OS are usually running a snowball (ie its swap file) within
itself to devour a system disk space (200 MB is nothing to Windows 98 for a
dinner.)

Any hints will be appreciated.
