Here we go, one more time ;)

Last year Ed Schröder (and others) claimed that Chess Tiger had earned two GM
norms in the 2001 edition of this tournament. I pointed out here on CCC (on two
different occasions I believe) that neither a human player nor a computer can
earn 2 GM norms in a single tournament. Still, a year later (30.7.2002) this
statement can still be found prominently displayed on Scrhöder's webpage:
http://www.rebel.nl/edindex.htm ("Chess Tiger - The miracle of Argentina -
Earning 2 GM norms!").

This year false claims are again being made regarding the performance of the
computer program playing in this tournament. The truth is that Hiarcs did NOT
earn a GM norm in the tournament, even when we interpret the rules more
liberally than we would do in the case of a human player.

*Liberal mode on*
Let's assume that the average rating of Hiarc's opponents in this tournament is
approximately 2.426 as is stated on the official homepage (Actually, the July
ratings of players belonging to the Argentinian federation have not been
published yet). This would put Hiarcs opponents into Category 8 (2.426-2.450).
For a GM norm in a Category 8 tournament a 73% winning score is required. In a
10 round tournament, such as this one (well, 11 but each player had one bye and
so played 10 games), that rounds up to 7,5 points. Hiarcs scored 7 points and so
missed the GM norm by half a point.
