Some time ago I ran a "thematic tournament" with the Jerome gambit (guess why)
between Fritz, Junior, Shredder and Hiarcs. For some reason I dug up the games,
and took a closer look to the games won by white. In two out of twelve games
white won; I guess that's close to debunking the gambit. :)
In one of the two white won games, this one between Junior 7 and Fritz 7 the
following position came up.
[D]r1b3nr/pppp3p/3k1qp1/2b1n3/4PP2/7Q/PPPP2PP/RNB1KR2 w Q - 0 10
Here Junior plays 10.b4 rapidly, working towards 10...Nf3+ to get the rook
11.Qxf3 Qxa1 12.bxc5+ Ke7 [ 12...Kxc5? 13.Qa3+] 13.Qb3 Nf6 14.Bb2
[D]r1b4r/ppppk2p/5np1/2P5/4PP2/1Q6/PBPP2PP/qN2KR2 b - - 0 14
and after 14...Qxb1+ 15.Ke2 Qxf1+ 16.Kxf1
[D]r1b4r/ppppk2p/5np1/2P5/4PP2/1Q6/PBPP2PP/5K2 b - - 0 16
a fairly equal position.
10...Bxb4 doesn't work out right it seems: 11.Qb3 Nc4 ( 11...Nd3+ 12.cxd3 Qxa1
13.Bb2; 11...Nf3+ 12.gxf3 Qxa1 13.Bb2) 12.e5+ Nxe5 13.Bb2.
Maybe this is the best: 10...Bd4 11.c3 Nf7 12.cxd4 Qxd4 13.Nc3 and black still
has some material advantage - maybe outweighing the bad king safety and poor
development.
I can't put my finger behind the mechanics, but it seems most programs
underestimate the locking in of the queen after Qxa1.
Maybe someone has beter insight in the dynamics of the position here.
I'm working with a PIII@750. 256Mb hashtables.
Are there any other program considering 10. b4 as a solution here? as somehow it
seems pivotal.
J.
