I use a Palm Vx (an older model) which has a monochrome screen, too.

Both Chess Genius (http://www.chessgenius.com/) and Chess Tiger
(http://www.rebel.nl/chesstiger/) are very good programs for this platform. I
often play against them and think the pieces are good.
As you can look at the board from above I feel it is often even easier to
concentrate than in games against PC programs. I don't miss colours.
In my opinion the Chess Tiger layout and pieces are superior.

When it is about playing strength on an overclocked Palm ( this can be done by
free software and is easy) it should be enough for training games for players up
to 2200 ELO level or casual games. There is no big difference in speed between
the Palm models if you overclock them.

Both Chess Tiger and Chess Genius have free trial versions. I haven't tested the
trial version of Tiger but the trial version of Genius is nice to see if you
like this program and is about the level of older tabletop chesscomputers on
lower levels.
