It depends on the time control and (the hardware's speed and memory). The time control and the rating X,Y 2 dimensional graph looks somewhat like (Y = 1 / X) which is an inverted hyperbola under current software. If you read in the CCC archives, I made some interesting observations. You could interpolate future events possibly with better hardware. The easiest observation is doubling the hardware speed equals adding 25 to 30 FIDE rating points of one particular time control (which is rather linear it seems). Of course, people will deny statistics altogether because of things like predictable moves in closed positions or (an amazing stupified queen sacrifice). Chess is still interesting to me though.
