Subject: Scid problem with PGN files

(I'm running W98se/IE6.)

---------------------------
Scid problem with PGN files
---------------------------

Scid (version 3.3) used to work OK in its operations with PGN files. However now
it apparently thinks PGN files are all "read only". It will not create a PGN
file, nor perform manipulations which change the contents of a PGN file. Here is
the error message I get if I try to copy games from a Scid database "mygames"
into an ordinary PGN file "game.pgn"...

Cannot copy games
"mygames" -> "game.pgn:"
the target database (game.pgn) is read-only.

However viewing the properties of the "game.pgn" file shows that it does NOT
have the read-only attribute set! I tried setting then removing the read-only
attribute for the PGN file, but it has no effect. Also I tried reinstalling
Scid, and that doesn't help.

The only thing I can think of is that I installed Chessbase 7.0 recently, and
PGN files on my system are now listed as "Chessbase 7.0" type files. I tried
changing the association of PGN files from Chessbase 7.0 to another program,
such as Notepad (a text editor), but that doesn't help. Also, if Chessbase 7.0
is the cause of the problem, then I may be stuck up the proverbial creek.
Chessbase 7.0 is not listed in Control Panel under Add/Remove Programs, so I
have no way to remove it cleanly.

What to do?!
