This is not terribly uncommon, unfortunately. A brief reminder.. A couple of months ago, Crafty was invited to play in a 4 player double round-robin on chess.net, game/30 (I believe, or something similar with an increment perhaps) with Roman, Christiansen, and Yasser. Crafty went 1.5-.5 vs Roman in rounds 1-2, then went 1.5-.5 with Christiansen in rounds 3-4. Yasser had identical results leaving both he and Crafty tied for first. He elected to not play Crafty, although he has played it hundreds of games spread over chess.net and ICC. I got the feeling it was because it was in a "public" place, as he said he'd love to play it some privately (he already had, of course) but not in a public event on a server. It's a "sign of the times".. I'm afraid... Note that I have no idea what kind of financial arrangement Roman had worked out to get them into the event in the first place. Wasn't quite good enough, obviously. :)
