Botvinik's method was the method of analogies. Basically, he sought to restrict
the search tree to positions which had changed "enough" to require a new search,
and otherwise to use the values already stored from the evaluation of a very
similar position.

It never worked, in any program, AFAIK. His program's name was Pioneer, and it's
lack of success is why you probably never heard of it outside a CC historical
book.
