Hmmm, for Chest this was not _that_ difficult: on Athlon 1500+ with 128MB hash
Chest needs 12 minutes to find a unique mate in 8:

PV: cxb7 Bxe6 Nbxa6 Rxh7 Nc7+ Qxc7 f7+ Rxf7 dxc7 Nxf5 c8=Q+ Bxc8 bxc8=Q+ Ke7
Qd7#

Timing info:

# 4 0.12s [ 12.00] 28kN [ 18.36] 1.12 1524- 0
# 5 1.33s [ 11.08] 268kN [ 9.60] 1.41 18117- 0
# 6 10.76s [ 8.09] 2044kN [ 7.62] 1.69 178538- 0
# 7 85.97s [ 7.99] 15140kN [ 7.41] 2.04 1604309- 4745
# 8 717.33s [ 8.34] 114984kN [ 7.59] 2.24 13960456- 10761223

I couldn't find anything unusual in Chest's statistics, so I've no idea
why this one is slow for you.

Cheers,
Heiner
