Subject: Crafty 17.16 SE will be released later tonight.

Author: Mike Byrne

Date: 18:50:23 08/05/02

All those who requested the previous versions will be emailed a current 17.16
executable. Since each version is better than the previous, I'm not in the
habit of releasing older modified crafty's. To request a free copy of 17.16 SE,
please email me at mfbyrne_pa@msn.com.

All my modified Crafty's are based on Dr. Robert Hyatt's Crafty original Crafty
source - and these modified Crafty's would not exist except for him.

I always send my modified source to Bob and he is naturally free to implement if
he choses - but I am sure he would be the first to say I'm not a programmer and
my programming is sometimes "not good".

Changes:

It is more aggressive with its pawns - sometimes perhaps too aggressive. In
this case, I increased the piece square values for advanced pawns by a little
bit. It is out playing my previous versions by about 2:1 margin in wins.
(Note - a 2:1 margin against avery similiar program is not as much as
improvement as 2:1 margin against a dissimiliar program - but it's enough to
warrant a release - I think).

There are some other minor chanegs as well - but the big change is with the
piece square value for pawns.

Here's a position form ana actual game - this game was very interesting as the
newer version got caught in a bad trade and both sides were agreeing that 17.15
SE was up by about two pawns. This one move changed the game.

[D] 1k2b3/2q2p2/Q6p/p4Pb1/1p1R3p/1P6/2P3PP/1K6 w - - 32

f6! forces the exchange of the queens and the pawn queens winning the bishop in
another 9 moves. My older version would take a long time to find f6 - how long
I am not sure.
