Can't help you with the LAN play (hope somebody else will), but I've used a lot
of serial and null modem cables. My two cents is FORGET the null modem adaptor.
Reason is, they add a lot of leverage and weight against your connector, which a
regular cable does not have.

This can easily cause the cable to get pulled enough to break free of the
connector. Say you want to move the laptop to a nearby table top from your lap,
for instance.

Depending on how they're built (yes, they vary), you may or may not be able to
use the little connector screws to help secure them.

So get the whole null modem cable, and no adaptors or extra connectors. Be sure
the ends match your desktop and laptop connectors both for size (25 or 9 pin)
and type (male or female), and you'll avoid any headaches from any extra
adaptors or connectors (whether null modem, male/female, 25/9 pin), pulling out
the cable.

Bliss will follow :)
