Indeed, I think tests done "at home" are more reliable. However, for many people
it is not easily possible to test engines under "serious" conditions at home
(say with ponder on, with more hash, than is possible in engine matches, ...)

My (not too :-) serious advice: Never log into any chess server. If you cannot
resist - at least never try to observe computer chess games or especially no
games of chess engines vs. humans. If you cannot resist - please observe them
silently. Never ever try to kib anything. Never try to look at the list of
observers. Don't talk to other observers! Ignore all the kibs of people, when
you watch human vs. (C). Some kibs may look funny - sometimes even some xyz(GM)
will kib. Hey - they are all drunk, why should they care otherwise? And - if you
should start to write your own engine. Don't look at the programmers channel
("-ch 64" on ICC will be very efficient on ICC).

If you do not want to follow my advice, you will see soon, that you will waste
lots of time.

Cheers,
Dieter
