For their name "Free" is supposed to be the first letter of the acronym. It seems to me that they have taken a bad turn. First, they removed the FICS source from public access. And the story of denying timeseal shows that they want full control of who can play chess "for free." I think that what Andrew Tridgell has done to provide the full source for a working version of the server is the way out of the problem. Now, on the one hand, I think that the "pay" servers are probably better anyway. But it seems to me that if someone cannot pay even $50, it would be nice if they could play chess in any way they should choose. Maybe someone with a Linux box (or any UNIX box with GCC ang GLIBC) could make a server available. It might be nice to have an "authors only server" for testing.
