I do not think that the opening phase is a problem
relative to other programs.
I tested movei against aristarch
(10 minutes per game on p800) when movei always changed
the first move so aristarch usually found itself
out of book after moves like 1.a4 and
the result was that aristarch won 32-4 and 4 draws.

Note that the endgame is one of the
main weaknesses of movei relative to other programs.

Aristarch lost 2 out of 4 of the games
in the endgame phase
(maybe tablebases could help aristarch in
these games but I used no tablebases)
