Aristarch is a very tough opponent for Crafty SE 17.16. Equal IMO in many respects. Weakness is in the endgame. Here is a position that illustrates thsi weakness. Aristarch is playing White , Crafty 17.16 is black. As we head in the endgame, Aristarch has an advantage - the only question seems to be - would Crafty beable to hold the game to a drawn Position after 39 moves. Aristarch is a pawn up. [D] 8/1n1r1pkp/p5p1/1p3bP1/7P/PBR5/2PN4/2K5 w - - 0 40 After 47 moves, Aristarch is still in control of the game [D] 8/2r2pkp/1R4p1/2n3P1/p3b2P/P4N2/3K4/3B4 w - - 0 48 Aristarch's knight begin making a series of aggressive, yet questionable moves and the position look like this after 54.Kd2 [D] 4r3/5pk1/6p1/1R4P1/p2Nb3/P7/3K4/3Bn3 b - - 0 54 The black knight will now have to move to g2 shortly - which is not a good square for this knight to be in with this position . After 61 moves, white's position has some winning chances with outside passed pawn that did not exist at move 39 above. Crafty has outplayed Aristarch with a series of slightly better moves - nothing that stands out and hits you. Aristarch would have better trying to avoid this position. Between moves 56 and 66, Aristarch moves its knight 8 times! After move 69. Bd7, Crafty's evaluation facors white for the first time since move 30. After 69. Bd7 [D] 8/3B1pk1/1n1K2p1/R3N1P1/8/P1r5/6b1/8 b - - 0 69 ================================================================ Position after 76... Bf7 [D] 2B5/R4bk1/1K3pp1/4r1P1/P7/8/8/8 w - - 0 77 here Crafty plays a5! while the black bishop is till pinned and not waste time with gf6? ==================================================================== After 76 ... Kf6 [D] 2B5/1R3b2/PK3kp1/6p1/8/8/8/4r3 w - - 0 80 The pin was getting annoyed and black finally unpinned the bishop with 79 ...Kf6. Bit ther are serious problems for black with outside passer. ===================================================================== After 81 ... Ra1 [D] 2B5/PRK2b2/5kp1/6p1/8/8/8/r7 w - - 0 82 Not only is the pawn going to queen, but Crafty is planning to keeping the queen as well - and begins to set the pick in protecting the pawn with 82 Rb6! ====================================================================== After 87 a8=Q, the game is over. [D]Q7/2K3k1/B2R2p1/1b4p1/8/8/8/r7 b - - 0 87 ======================================================================= A series of less than optimal moves cost Aristarch the game after the first 40 moves in this game - but that does take away the fact that this is very strong engine and is fun to watch play!
