I'd agree with you if DB Jr or Deeper Blue for that matter used a lot of selective extensions the way the PC software does. These make the search performance inherently unstable depending on the type of position, giving you radically different results (times to solution) between position types. Also Deeper Blue, although having a good performance against Kasparov, would have likely improved markedly had they not disassembled it and instead spent a year just adjusting the existing evaluation options. From all accounts I've read it appears clear the full potential of Deeper Blue was never tapped. This fact alone makes the result even more impressive. I guess the only way to really see the potential of this kind of system is to find a way to fund Hsu to build DB III. With financial backing, I wonder if he'd still be interested. Mike
