The following position was reached this past weekend in a tournament by a friend
of mine. He was white and should have won but misplayed the endgame. Using the
5-man EGTB, I was able to determine how to win. It's quite pretty and sort of
looks like a study:
[d] 5K2/2p5/8/2k5/8/2P5/4P3/8 w - - 0 1
1.Kg7!! the only win
[1.Kf7? Kd5! the only draw; mutual zugzwang! (i.e., White to move draws;
Black to move loses.) 2.Kf6 Kc4! the only draw 3.e4 Kxc3 4.e5 c5
the only draw 5.e6 c4 6.e7 Kd2! the only draw 7.e8Q c3 the only draw
8.Qd8+ Kc1 the only draw 9.Ke5 c2 the only draw 10.Kd4 Kb2
11.Qb6+ Ka2 12.Qa5+ Kb2 13.Qb4+ Ka2 14.Qd2 Kb1 15.Qd3 Kb2
16.Qe2 Ka1! = the only draw
(16...Kb1?? 17.Kc3! c1Q+ 18.Kb3! and mates)]
1...Kd5 the best defense
[1...Kc4 2.e4! the only win 2...Kxc3 3.e5 +- the only win; as in
the main line]
2.Kf7! the only win 2...Kd6 the best defense 3.Kf6! the only win 3...Kd5
the best defense 4.Kf5! the fastest win 4...Kd6 the best defense
White now pushes any pawn and wins.
