I know of a program (IDL) that works by online registration. IIRC it works like this: every copy of the program has a unique ID, the user emails this ID number together with the number of his ethernet card (every ethernet card has some kind of unique ID, I can't remember the specifics). Now after a few days he receives a licence file, basicly it's an encrypted key that only works if the program is used with _that_ ethernet card. So every user needs to register, and they need an ethernet card. Perhaps you could offer this as an alternative to the users that have such a card, they would only have to re-new their licence once per year or so? -S.
