I read your post on the winboard forum. Please dont post it twice. Note I am not saying that there might not be *some* posts that might deserve to be posted on multiple fora. Here is my reply from the winboard forum: Hi there, the question is not fast or selective. The top programs of today are both searching a lot of positions per second, and are also very selective at deciding which positions to look at. Improving the speed (nodes per second) and the quality of the selection (better extension tuning, better razoring, better q-search rules to name a few standart ideas) both helps. Bitboard board representation has nothing to do with that at all btw., buzz words are only good when used in the right meaning. All in all I would suggest you try write your own program. It is a lot of fun. It also teaches you that most brilliant ideas don't work. But if you get one of them to work, you will feel like the king of the universe. You could name your program enginE :-) Georg
