i don't believe that. human players often choose a variation where they see they
can force a perpetual, in the hope of getting more. maybe you remember
kasparov's brilliant win against topalov a few years back, with a *huge*
combination. actually, kasparov hadn't seen through it. he saw he had a draw and
had a gut feeling that he had more than that. which turned out to be right.

i think this game is similar. anand sees he has at least a draw, and ponomariov
has to find the right moves to get the draw. this is not "playing for the draw",
specially not in rapid chess. also, ponomariov is not the type to be afraid of
anyone. if he had seen that Bc8 was a loser (as it seems to be), and had seen
that Kxg7 was a draw, he would have played Kxg7 for sure.
