Robert Hyatt said: "Chess programs are pretty bad actors and stress hardware... this is one reason that it seems that Crafty is going to be in the new SpecInt98 benchmark... it will be the first 64 bit integer program and the first non-numerical algorithm that will really stress- test compiler optimizers..." I reply: This is not an unprecedented development. David Fotland was asked a few years ago to submit his early Go program Cosmos as a benchmark. From David's web page: The source code for the final version of Cosmos was given to the Spec benchmark committee, and is now 099.GO, one of the SpecInt95 benchmark suite. Hundreds of compiler writers around the world are tuning their compilers to make my go program run faster :-) So soon hundreds of compiler writers around the world will be tuning their compilers to make Crafty run faster! I LIKE IT! Ian Osgood
