In CCC poll question #4, dated 5-14-98, the respondents [i.e. CCC members] overwhelmingly responded "Analyzing games or positions" in response to the question "What is your primary use for chessplaying computers or software?" I am not sure how to interpret this. For example, in several recent threads, someone names a position and everybody evaluated the position and then reported the result [and discussed the implications to software design]. also, some recent threads deal with comparisons of how well their software plays against other software. Is it just that simple? Does this completely explain the poll result? Alternatively, are people primarily using the software to analyze their own games? If so, we come to the part that interests me. I have used chess engines in various ways to help me analyze my own games and to evaluate published repertoire lines. But I suspect that I have "just scratched the surface" in finding ways to effectively utilize this software. If most people on CCC are using their chess engines to analyze games and positions, then what, exactly, are they doing?
