Fritz7 almost certainly requires DirectX 7.0 for the GUI interface, to play chess, use the chessboard window, etc. [I have never tried to do anything with the Fritz7 server, so don't know what it requires.] I know because I had a prior version of DirectX and it wouldn't work right. As soon as I installed DirectX 7.0a from the CM8000 CD, it fixed the problems -- so that's pretty indicative. Well, in my experience DirectX trashes systems that are not designed to receive it. My graphics driver from HP supports DirectX 7.0 but not anything more current, so I can't risk it. Since my HP system is out of warranty, no further driver updates will be forthcoming from HP, thus I will never be able to upgrade DirectX beyond 7.0 on this W98se system. WP
