Hello all I have posted this here as few people read the thinkers foruem. This
is something that has been naggin' at me for some time now so when I 'cracked
it' I thought I'd post it here esp. as you guys are smart and Fischer was
supposed to think 'like a computer'.
I have recently read the book 'fischer versus the russians' and having read thru
it and also my 60 mem. games I realise ( as a psychiatric nurse with many years
experience) that Fischaer has aspergers symdrome!! Read on and see if you agree.
Asperger's syndrome is a form of autism and is usually associated with people
with a moderate/high intellegence.
This kind of person has a clear delination between 'right' and 'wrong' there are
no 'grey' areas. (This could explain why Fiscer so often played on in drawn
positions). People with aspergers are usually vey intense people who take people
literally. I once told an aspergers patient of mine that I 'bit someone's head
off 'when I was in a bad mood.. he recoiled in horror!!). People with aspergers
have in recent times been very successful as computer programmers!!. Lile autism
aspergers is dominant in males. Chess is particularly suited to people with
aspergers and when I read the above books it became clear the Fischer sees chess
not as an art form (e.g. like Bronstein) but as a problem to be solved, hence
his narrow opening repotiore and his excellent endgame technique. This I feel is
why he had particular problems against Tal. I also feel that he is very
misunderstood ,he cannnot help himself, when he feels that a side is in the
right he says so also when he feels a side is in the wrong he also says so, he
doesn't hold a middle ground. This is also why he can't maintain interpersonal
relationships, he's incapable of it. Please check out the many internet sources
of aspergers and see if you agree.
take care
Rory Nolan
