Bas,

I agree with you.

For anyone who is starting to write a chess program I'd recommend UCI. When I
wrote Monarch I started to implement Winboard and was half way through
implementing it when I started tinkering with UCI. The complete UCI
implementation took no more than one day to do (expluding MultiPV). I didn't
get round to implementing all of the Winboard protocol (analysis & pondering).
Since then I've re-written the protocol section for added stability and in doing
so I've taken the Winboard code out - I'm not sure I'll add it back in as I do
*all* of my testing using UCI. There is also an excellent range of GUIs that
now support UCI (e.g. Fritz 7, Shredder 6, Hiarcs 8, Chess Tiger 14, Gandalf 5,
Arena, Shredder 5 and Chess Assistant 6) and I have a huge range of possible
opponents that are either ChessBase engines or other UCI engines.

UCI is the future IMHO!!

Regards,

Steve
