You also have to keep in mind that Winboard would not be the same as it is if it
came after UCI. The reason for Winboard's "sloppiness" is because it was
originally only intended to be a GUI for GNU Chess, and so it had some rather
quirky methods of doing things, since that's how GNU Chess did things back then.

If Winboard wouldn't have come until after UCI, then I have a strong feeling UCI
would not be as good as it is, since it wouldn't have had any Winboard
experiences to learn from.

If Winboard wouldn't have come until after UCI, Winboard wouldn't have all of
those quirky "sloppy" methods of doing things.

If Winboard wouldn't have come until after UCI, then Winboard probably would
have improved upon UCI, and the roles would be reversed.

If Winboard wouldn't have come until after UCI, UCI would be the "old dog" and
we'd probably think it was rather quirky and antiquated, and we'd all think
Winboard was the "new great thing."
