I don't claim to know all about deep blue. After reading the stuff in the latest paper about how they did extensions, I wouldn't beging to try to understand their numbers. however, I have seen programs jump by 2 with what I would call "real plies" and their branching factor was not 25 as you might expect. Bebe was the first but there were others...
