Just finished a little tourney from the above position.
The possible pawn ending is lost for black. So trading
rooks is a definite no-no. Except in rare cases like
when white pawns are on f4,g2,h3 and black has played
pawn to h4.
The following programs participated (in alphabetical order):
Aristarch
Chess Tiger 14
Fritz 7
Junior 7
Shredder PB
Yace
2 games were played vs each opponent (white/black)
40 moves in 1 hour - PIII 800 - 64MB hash (96 for Tiger)
2 programs showed a very solid play and went through the tournament
without losing a single game. The other 4 programs showed a somewhat
dubious knowledge about this ending and went for rook trading several
times. With severe consequences...
A little quiz: In what order would you rank these programs when it
comes down to this special rook ending? Which 2 programs
could have played this tourney without losing a single game?
Rank:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
