FIDE President, Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, in announcing that FIDE Commerce would underwrite the $1m prize money, stated that at the Congress last year, the FIDE General Assembly had decided to establish a "man vs. machine" challenge. He further stated that on September 8th this year,the FIDE Board will convene to adopt the rules for this challenge, which will become an annual event and part of the official FIDE Chess Calendar. David Levy, President of the International Computer Chess Association joined in this announcement and stated that the ICCA will officially sanction this match.
