Are you sure Rxe2 is bad?
The game continuation was 8... Rxe2 $4 {(Rh1) -0.26/12 25} 9. Kxe2 {0.78/14 32}
9... a5 {-0.27/14 107} 10. Kf2 {(g3) 0.69/14 62}

[D]8/1pp5/2p4p/p1P2kp1/8/P4P2/1P3KPP/8 b - -

But here, a4 was played and looks like a misconception. It wins the c5 pawn but
in a useless way giving black tripled pawns which aren't passed. Meanwhile the
white king penetrates on the k-side.

Better seems 8...Kf4, keeping the white king out. Now if 9.g3+ Ke5 10.Ke3 and
black maybe has a draw, eg: 10...a4 11.f4+ gxf4 12.gxf4 Kd5 13.Kf3 h5 14.Kg3 Ke4
15.Kh4 Kxf4 etc (black has enough moves with his pawns to keep the white king
prisoner!)

Also 8...Kf4 9.g3+ Ke5 10.b4 axb4 11.axb4 Kd4 12.f4 gxf4 13.gxf4 b6 14.Kf3 bxc5
15.bxc5 Kxc5 is fine for black too

cheers,
Peter
