0x88 is probably the most popular.  I personally don't think there is a
dime's worth of difference in the two until you migrate to a 64 bit machine.
Then bitmaps will have an edge.

Otherwise, it is a matter of preference.  Just like choosing the programming
language.  FORTRAN is just as good as C, if you like FORTRAN better.  If you
like C, then C is better.  Because you are best at what you know the best.

bitmaps take a significant amount of time to "get in the groove", because
they represent a different way of thinking, and from experience, it takes
some time to "think bitmaps"...
