No.  That is the _only_ place where fast I/O is necessary.  Trying to
rip thru bits and pieces of 7.5 gigs of disk space is very I/O intensive,
and comparing my 10K scsi drives to other types (EIDE for example) will
show exactly how good SCSI drives really are when I/O throughput is the
measure...

If you reduce rotational latency by 2x, then you should see a corresponding
improvement in search speed for positions where the program is probing the
EGTBs heavily.
