It's more than possible. In the olden days we used to call the 0x88, 7 bit board. And 256 square boards were called 8 bit boards. The extra bit is often a throwaway. It is actually possible to introduce a few added benefits from the larger board. Conversely it is possible to use 0x88 with a 64 bit board. If you use a translator function you get a constant slowdown when accessing the board. But the move generation might possibly make it a win. MvH Dan Andersson
