I've looked through the whole thread, and I still have no idea what might be
happening. Nobody else has reported this kind of problem, but I think it might
have to do with what you may have described as shutting down the setup program
"early".

The Ubi1.EXE file is the registration program. It is the last program run by the
installation script, but it is NOT the last thing that the script does.
Therefore, if you shut down the setup before it completely finished, then you
will likely get the result you described above (the Chessmaster folder having
only Ubi1.EXE in it).

If you did NOT shut down the installation early (i.e. you waited until the
dialog came up that asked you if you wanted to read the ReadMe file, and then
quit normally), then I am clueless as to what might have happened.

Any further information you may discover would be greatly appreciated.
