[D]8/1ppr1kp1/p1p4p/8/8/5P2/PPP1RKPP/8 w - - 0 1
This is the Nunn1 position. White is a little better because of black's
double pawn. The rooks make it a more or less even position though. Even if
all the pawns on the q-side were removed, black can still hold the rook ending
with 2 vs 3 pawns. The ultimate taboo for black is to swap rooks, since the
pawn ending is structurally lost for him. With the rooks gone white can force
a passer - black cannot.
As some of you might recall, I have played out this position between some
of the top programs. 40 moves in 1 hour - PIII 800. After 6 engines tried,
Fritz 7 showed the best performance, just ahead of Tiger. One of the two
last programs to play just swung up to 1st place though. Final results:
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
1 Hiarcs 8 ** ½1 ½½ 01 ½½ 11 ½½ ½1 9.0/14
2 Fritz 7 ½0 ** ½½ ½1 ½½ ½½ 1½ 11 8.5/14
3 Tiger 14 ½½ ½½ ** ½½ ½1 ½½ ½½ ½1 8.0/14
4 CM 8777 10 ½0 ½½ ** 10 ½½ 1½ 0½ 6.5/14
5 Shredder PB ½½ ½½ ½0 01 ** 0½ 1½ ½½ 6.5/14
6 Junior 7 00 ½½ ½½ ½½ 1½ ** 10 01 6.5/14
7 Yace ½½ 0½ ½½ 0½ 0½ 01 ** 1½ 6.0/14
8 Aristarch ½0 00 ½0 1½ ½½ 10 0½ ** 5.0/14
The engines placed 1-3 showed the best and most solid play - only 2 losses
in 42 games! Hiarcs must have improved significantly since the last version.
Fritz 7 is strong in endings nowadays [at least in eng-eng games ;-]
Tiger was solid but had difficulties in winning games. I had expected more
from Shredder but it lost 2 pawn races and swapped down to a lost pawn ending
in 1 game.
Let's have a look at the 3 losses from Shredder. Some of these positions just
might make it as good test position. I have added some comments in the .pgn
but they were made rather hastily, trying to nail the big errors in the games.
[D]8/1p6/p1p1k2p/5R1K/2P2PP1/2P3r1/8/8 b - - 0 14
This is Junior - Shredder. Here Shredder misevaluated the coming pawn race
and went into 14.-Rxc3?, winning a pawn but losing the glory. Holding with
14.-Ke7! looks much better and should give a draw.
[D]8/8/2PR4/6pp/6k1/KPr5/8/8 b - - 0 29
Here we have Tiger vs Shredder. Another pawn race but the chosen move from
Shredder looks much too slow - 29.-Kf4? lost the game while 29.-h4! looks
to hold.
[D]8/1pp5/p1p2k2/7p/P4P1P/1P3K2/2Pr2R1/8 b - - 0 13
Finally CM 8777 - Shredder, where Shredder went into the land of taboos and
swapped down to a lost pawn ending with 13.-Rxg2?? Much better was 13.-Rd1!,
keeping the rook, which should draw.
