I tested with pondering enabled, because it was meant as (very) limited
simulation of the WBEC conditions after an idea by Uri. Whether it is fair or
not is a different discussion. When everything is enabled for each engine then
it's "fair" IMO. At least from a competitive viewpoint. The argument about
pondering vs. non-pondering as being unfair is a sliding scale. You could argue
that this also applies to books, tablebases, nullmove or something else.
Validity or fairness depends on what you're testing.

I think you exaggerate the effect of pondering. It wouldn't be surprising IMO if
a commercial engine where capable of beating all the best amateurs with that
particular handicap.
